Volunteer Drivers Needed

We are in need of drivers to take seniors shopping, run errands and to medical appointments. Reimbursement for trips are negotiated with the rider. We also need drivers to help us deliver our monthly Senior Gazette and periodically deliver flyers around Grayling.

Home Delivered Meals Drivers Needed

The Commission on Aging is in need of drivers who can deliver meals to homebound seniors. Drivers are needed Monday, Wednesday & Friday 10:30am - 12:30pm. You pick the day! Reimbursement for mileage is paid by the COA.

Foster Grandparents

If you are 60 years or older, have 20 hours a week to volunteer and your income is below $13,000 (single individual) or $17,500 (couple) per year, you qualify to be a Foster Grandparent. These seniors spend time with children in various settings providing one-on-one attention. You will receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour and reimbursement for travel costs. Call 1-800-633-3335 x209 if you are interested.

Senior Companions

If you are 60 years or older, have 20 hours a week to volunteer and your income is below $13,000 (single individual) or $17,500 (couple) per year, you qualify to be a Senior Companion. These volunteers visit with seniors who need someone to spend time with them. You will receive a stipend of $2.65 per hour and reimbursement for travel costs. Call 1-800-633-3335 x260 if you are interested.

RSVP

There are many opportunities for seniors in Northern Michigan to volunteer. RSVP helps place senior volunteers into places that are in need of help. If you are interested contact the RSVP Coordinator at 989-275-1717. RSVP can give you a list of places looking for volunteers and help match your skills and likes to a place that can really use your help!

Home Delivered Meals

If you would like to help out with the Meals on Wheels program, but are unable to drive around, here is a great opportunity for you. We are in need of someone to ride with the Dial-A-Ride route twice a month and test the temperature of the food. If you are interested call 989-348-7123.

TRIAD

The TRIAD group which is comprised of Seniors, the COA, and the Crawford County Law Enforcement & Emergency Management, has chosen it’s first project - a telephone reassurance program. This program would provide volunteers who would make a daily phone call to seniors who live alone. The purpose of the phone call would be to ensure that they are doing fine as well as to provide some companionship. Volunteers would be partnered with a back up volunteer who would make the calls when they are gone. If you would be interested in volunteering for this program, please contact the Senior Center at 989-348-7123.

Fundraising

Are you good at raising money for organizations? Have a gift for selling? There are many opportunities to help the Grayling Senior Center fundraise for their activities. We often are selling raffle tickets throughout the year. We have several hot dog sales throughout the summer. And the seniors are always making or donating items to sell at our Rummage sales. Join the fun and help us raise money too!

Tax Assistance

Would you like to learn to do income taxes? The IRS and AARP have teamed up to offer free tax services to seniors and low income tax payers and we need your help. A week long training program is provided each January. Volunteering occurs mostly in February, March and April.

Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP)

If you’re looking for a challenge, volunteering to be a MMAP volunteer is just for you. Volunteers participate in a 4 day initial training and then quarterly refreshers. Once trained, MMAP volunteers assist senior and disabled Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries with their insurance coverage by reviewing options, assisting with enrollment, solving problems and education about available benefits. Computer experience including internet usage is required.
